…President Tinubu Signs Law Returning Nigeria To Old National Anthem | #NwokeukwuMascot
In a significant legislative move, President Bola Tinubu has signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law, officially reverting Nigeria to its former national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” This development was disclosed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, coinciding with the Silver Jubilee celebration of Nigeria’s 4th Republic.
The joint session, held in Abuja, was a ceremonial occasion aimed at launching the reinstated national anthem. President Tinubu, although present, did not deliver a speech, as he was scheduled to inaugurate the Abuja metro line later in the day. Akpabio clarified that the focus of the session was to introduce the revived anthem, emphasizing its historical and cultural significance.
Both the Senate and the House of Representatives had previously passed the National Anthem Bill 2024 in separate sittings, reflecting a legislative consensus on this cultural shift. The re-adoption of “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” the anthem in use prior to 1978, marks a return to a symbol of national heritage and pride.
The transition back to the old anthem has been met with diverse reactions, reflecting the nation's rich tapestry of opinions and perspectives. As Nigeria commemorates 25 years of its 4th Republic, the move underscores a renewed emphasis on historical continuity and national identity.
