…Senator Abaribe Calls for Justice in the Murder of Emma Noko | #NwokeukwuMascot
Late Emmanuel Michael Okocha |
Former Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has strongly condemned the brutal murder of Emmanuel Micheal Okocha, also known as Emma Noko, by a police officer in Aba. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has been described by Abaribe as "primitive and most unconscionable."
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom, Senator Abaribe called on the Inspector General of Police to take immediate action against the officers involved in the killing. He also urged the government to establish a Judicial Panel of Enquiry to investigate this incident and other similar cases in Aba.
The senator expressed his deep concern over the alarming rate at which law enforcement officers are involved in such killings. He emphasized that the people of Nigeria should not live in fear within their own country, and that the police should be a source of confidence and security for the citizens.
Senator Abaribe highlighted the proliferation of checkpoints in the South East as a contributing factor to these unfortunate incidents. He called on the authorities to ensure that these checkpoints serve their intended purpose of maintaining security, rather than becoming places for extortion.
The lawmaker extended his condolences to the family of Emma Noko, as well as to the community and people of Abia State. He emphasized that justice must be served, and that the police officer responsible for this heinous act should face the full consequences of the law. Abaribe also emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into similar incidents to prevent their recurrence.
The Abia south Senator urged the government and law enforcement agencies to uphold the rule of law and protect the lives and rights of the citizens.
His words in full, "That should not be the case. This is a country governed by laws and the officers must observe the rules of engagement, while dealing with the civil populace. The brutal murder of Mr Okocha is one too many, particularly in Aba and its environs by the police.
"To assuage the fears of the people, the policeman who allegedly shot and killed Okocha and thus left his young family without a bread winner must be made to face the full wrath of the law.
"And for other associated similar occurrences, l urge the government to set up a Judicial Panel of Enquiry to carry out a holistic inquest with the aim of nipping these ugly events in the bud', Abaribe said.
