NYSC Orders Akwa Ibom Coordinator to Replace Firewood with Gas Cylinders in Camp Kitchen | #NwokeukwuMascot
News
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken action following reports that the Akwa Ibom State Coordinator, Ekwe N. I. Chinyere, threatened corps members for exposing poor feeding conditions and resorting to fetching firewood from the forest for cooking. In response, the NYSC management, under the directive of the Director-General, Brig Gen Yusha'u Ahmed, has ordered the removal of firewood from the orientation camp kitchen and its replacement with gas cylinders.
Recall we had earlier reported how corps members at the Akwa Ibom State Orientation Camp had voiced their concerns regarding the quality of meals provided by the coordinator and other officials. They claimed that they were being served substandard food, prompting them to spend their own money to buy meals. Additionally, the corps members alleged that the coordinator collected their phone numbers and threatened them. However, the state NYSC denied these allegations, stating that the coordinator did not collect any phone numbers or make threats.
While the Akwa Ibom NYSC denied instructing corps members to fetch firewood from the camp forests, pictorial evidence confirmed that firewood was indeed being utilized for cooking. The coordinator did not dispute this evidence, as well as the fact that corps members were forced to cook food using firewood. Furthermore, it was acknowledged that the Nigerian government had increased the corps members' feeding allowance from N650 to N1,500 per day. However, many corps members reportedly left the camp due to illness, pregnancy, marriage, and dissatisfaction with the quality of food and alleged mishandling of their feeding allowance by the coordinator.
In response to the situation, the DG of NYSC has ordered the immediate removal of all firewood from the camp kitchen and its replacement with gas cylinders. This action comes ahead of the Hon. Minister of Youths' visit to the Akwa Ibom camp. The NYSC management aims to address the concerns raised by corps members and improve the overall conditions at the orientation camp.
