The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the suspension of the immediate past Honourable Member representing Ukwa East and Ukwa West Federal Constituency, Hon Uzoma Nkem Abonta. The suspension was made known today in a statement by the PDP Ward Chairman and Secretary of the party in Akwete-Ohandu Ward.

According to the statement, captioned "SUSPENSION OF HON. UZOMA NKEM-ABONTA (FORMER MEMBER REPRESENTING UKWA FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY) FROM PDP FOR ANTI-PARTY ACTIVITIES," it was said to come as a result of various allegations against Hon. Abonta, including anti-party activities, factionalization of the party in the ward, and his involvement in multiple court litigations without seeking internal party mechanisms for conflict resolution.

Furthermore, his appointment as the Deputy Director-General of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the upcoming 2023 general election and his public acceptance of the said appointment have also been cited as reasons for his suspension.

The suspension was carried out following a motion moved by an Ex-Officio of the Party and a Stakeholder in the Ward, Chief Zacheus Okere, and seconded by Chief Chika Eruba. The motion was adopted by no fewer than 15 Stakeholders, Leaders, and members of the PDP Ward Executive.

The suspension statement reads in full; “AT a well attended extra ordinary meeting of the PDP Akwete/Ohandu Ward Executives and Stakeholders held at the Party Secretariat Akwete by 3:30pm on February 28, 2024, to deliberate and X-ray on the past and way forward of the Party, these following grave infractions were noticed from the former member House of Representative Hon. Uzoma Abonta, It was debated upon and 98% of the Ward Executives after passing of Vote of No Confidence on him, hereby resolved as follows:

“That Hon. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta open and unbecoming anti-party activities has attracted Local, State, National condemnation/attention and huge embarrassment to the party.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta without recourse to the PDP internal mechanism of settling conflicts and disputes boastfully took the party to courts.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta has not paid his monthly party dues for some years now and does not attend Ward meetings convened by the Ward Chairman upon several invitations as this shows gross disrespect and indiscipline to the party.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta haven woefully failed in the last PDP Primaries and courts went ahead and bribed the APGA Abia State and became their Deputy Campaign Director, and since that publication came up through local news, The Vanguard News Paper and Social Media, he has not bothered to refute same.

“That upon obvious and embarrassing observation of Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta's appointment as the Deputy Director of APGA Abia State, the Party (PDP) at the Ward queried Abonta on this scenario and since November, 2022 when he received the query, he has not bothered to reply to wit.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta personally went to Senator Abaribe's country home, Ohuru Obingwa and forcefully collected the motor bike that was given to the Ward Chairman Akwete/Ohandu Ward and has not returned same till date inspite of several pleas.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta not too long joined APGA at APGA Secretariat, Umuibe Akwete and vomited all manner of insults on PDP, the party that gave him 16 years of unmerited representation.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta also contested the Deputy Governorship position (APGA) on two occasions but was disgraced because of his zero electoral value.

“That on 22nd January, 2023 in the guise of his birthday party at his country home, Akwete, Uzoma Abonta gathered as usual his APGA supporters where APGA candidates gathered, canvassed and campaigned for votes from his supporters. That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta did not attend any PDP Campaign rally in Ukwa (in the past campaign exercise) to canvass for votes or support for PDP instead he was busy campaigning for his party APGA.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta country home Akwete is now the official Secretariat of APGA in Ukwa. That Hon. Abonta is presently busy sponsoring party structures within PDP (which helped destroy), APGA his party and APC in Abia South. During the last general election, Abonta never voted and was caught in his country home Akwete, directing his supporters to vote for APGA his party.

“That inspite of Abonta's lackluster representation of 16 years, dictatorial tendencies, pomposities, lack of accountability, none inclusive representation and arrogance, he openly campaigned against the party that brought him to limelight.

“That Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta (former Member representing Ukwa Federal Constituency at the National Assembly) having glaringly worked against the party's constitution and all known moral norms is hereby suspended from the PDP indefinitely.

“That a seven man Disciplinary Committee is hereby set up to sit within two weeks with terms of reference to be determined by the Committee.

“That members shall be (1) Hon. Israel Bebe - Chairman (2) Comr. Paul Udechukwu - Secretary (3) Hon. Aguziendu Ibekwem - member (4) Chief Enyinna Zack - member (5) Hon. Obinna Jas (6) Hon. Leticia Aringa - member (7) Barr. Glory Kanu - member.” the statement ended.
