In a daring act of robbery, a gang of four individuals impersonating operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) targeted students at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUAU) in Umudike, Abia state.
However, their criminal activities were short-lived as the Abia Police Command swiftly responded to the distress call and apprehended three of the suspects.
According to ASP Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson for the Abia Police Command, the fake EFCC operatives forcefully relieved the students of their valuables, including mobile phones, and coerced them into transferring a sum of N120,000 to the assailants’ bank accounts. The incident occurred at the students’ residence, prompting immediate police action.
Upon receiving the information, police operatives were deployed to the university campus, leading to the arrest of the three robbers at the Man-O-War base in MOUAU. The police successfully recovered six stolen phones and the operational tricycle used by the gang during the robbery. Additionally, four EFCC jackets, two EFCC ID cards, one toy gun, and four EFCC search warrants were seized from the suspects.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing, as law enforcement agencies work diligently to gather further evidence and identify any potential accomplices. In light of this incident, ASP Maureen Chinaka urged residents of Abia state to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police promptly, regardless of whether the suspect is in uniform or not.

Her words: “Investigations into the matter are still in progress.
“Abia people are advised to be security-sensitive and to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately whether the suspect is in uniform or not.’’ she stated.
The successful arrest of these fake EFCC operatives serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement in maintaining public safety. The Abia Police Command’s swift response and subsequent apprehension of the suspects demonstrate their commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring that criminals face the full force of the law.
As investigations continue, it is hoped that the remaining suspect will be apprehended and brought to justice. The incident serves as a warning to criminals who seek to exploit the trust placed in law enforcement agencies, as the police remain dedicated to preserving the peace and security of the community.
